This year marks Pender’s 37th beach cleanup, a long history that Islander Michelle Marsden set in motion almost four decades ago.

The fabulous Pender Island Community has stepped up again this year to remove litter, garbage, cans, bottles, plastics, foam, and other debris from the byways and shorelines of our islands.

Great news! In November, a generous donor offered to match all donations made until the end of the year. The community response was amazing, and we are thrilled to announce that we reached our goal! These funds will help support our land protection, restoration, education and research programs in 2024. A heartfelt thanks to all who donated! Be Ursula for a day! She was passionate about this island and unafraid to share her thoughts on it. She was Pender's Broom Bash queen. In honour of her passion and perseverance in removing this highly invasive plant, the Pender Island Conservancy presents the 3rd annual Ursula Poepel Broom Bash from May 15-28. Many thanks to the folks who scoured the beaches, shores, parks and roadsides of North and South Pender removing plastics, garbage and other debris, preventing two large bin loads from potentially getting into the Salish Sea. Once again, Team Kelp volunteers headed out onto the waters around Pender Island mapping the kelp forests growing along our shores.

Stalwart Hope Bay Salmon Stream project volunteers spend 2 days hauling rock and shoveling gravel to enhance salmon habitat in the stream. They repaired weirs and placed spawning gravel and rock in the stream bed. Now we wait for the rains and keep our fingers crossed that some of the chum salmon that hatched in the stream four years ago will find their way back home to spawn.

June 1 - 4 2021, Divers planted 1700 shoots of eelgrass to create marine habitat in Hope Bay and in Bedwell Harbour off of Medicine Beach, creating habitat for many species of small marine creatures. The eelgrass shoots were harvested by Seachange Marine Conservation Society divers from healthy meadows at Welcome Bay. Calling Pender Bird Enthusiasts: Join us December 19 for the world's longest running citizen science wildlife survey, the 120th Annual Christmas Bird Count Pender birders will be out in rain, shine, or even snow, counting as many birds as can they can find, flying, perching, hopping or swimming.
