About the Event
Join Kristen Miskelly of Satinflower Nurseries for an in-person workshop on turning turf/weeds
into a native plant meadow! Native plants highlighted in this workshop are inspired by Garry
Oak Ecosystems/Kwetlal food systems of Southeastern Vancouver Island and the Gulf
Islands.
This is a two-part workshop, with an open presentation in the morning, followed by a tour of
three Pender Island gardens with meadows in different stages of development. Participation
in the tour is limited to 30, and registration is required.
Open Presentation 9:30 a.m. at the Hope Bay Bible Camp meeting room. We will begin by
chatting about local ecology and the ongoing evolution of these magnificent ecocultural
landscapes. How to remove unwanted grass, seeding and planting approaches, timing,
expectations, and maintenance tips will be discussed. Benefits of planting with native plants
and the wildlife rewards you should expect when you plant a meadow will also be highlighted.
Optional garden tours and hands-on activities 12:30 p.m. Limited to 30 people who have
registered and paid $20 in advance for the day. You will come away with some new tools
under your belt to start your own meadow!
